About
Artist, design researcher, educator.
I work at the point where sound becomes matter. My practice, my research and my teaching all circle the same question: what happens to a memory when you can hold it.
How I got here
I graduated from Bilkent University’s Department of Graphic Design, then took a master’s at Middle East Technical University in Industrial Design, working on 3D printing for end-use products. During that time I developed a specialized method for printing onto mirrors, and co-founded Mirror Fabbrica around it.
My doctoral research at METU followed from that: generative design methods for making personally meaningful objects through data physicalization. The thesis, Sound Data as Design Material, developed a transformation method that turns memory-related sound into three-dimensional form. It is still the engine behind everything I make.
Alongside the studio work I spent years as creative director at reo-tek, leading more than sixty-five projects across digital museums, interactive exhibitions and science centres — among them the Istanbul Cinema Museum, the Expo 2016 Agriculture and Biodiversity Museum, Göbeklitepe, The Gathering at Cer Modern, and the Kayseri Science Center. That work taught me how an idea survives contact with a real building and a real audience.
I now teach graphic design at Bilkent University, where my courses run from the graduation studio to computational design. The teaching and the practice feed each other; a good deal of my research starts in a critique.
